Local schools shine at London Teaching Awards12.44.32pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 25th Jul 2008 • THREE local primary schools have been recognised for their excellence at the prestigious London Teaching Awards 2008, held on 1 July. Stanley Junior School, in Teddington, won a distinction in the 'Sustainable Schools' category. Jan Kuhn, from Hampton Wick Infant School, received a distinction for the 'Teacher of the Year in a Primary School Award', while Darren Norman received a commendation in the 'Outstanding New Teacher' category for his work at Orleans Infant School. The awards celebrate the outstanding work of teachers, teaching assistants and governors in the capital. Schools around London nominate members of their team who have excelled in their roles. Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education, said: "I am delighted that Jan and Darren have been commended for their work. We have many great primary schools in our borough and it's important that their efforts are recognised. Last year's league tables showed the borough's primary schools to be the best in the country and these awards are further proof of that. Excellence in teaching is at the heart of our schools' success and is essential for firing pupil's enthusiasm and enjoyment of learning. Congratulations must also go to the staff and pupils at Stanley Junior. Sustainability is a key priority of the Council and it is encouraging to see young people in the borough taking such an active role in improving standards."
